WVU Collegiate Recovery Spring Break Adventure Trip
The Collegiate Recovery Adventure Spring Break program is a partnership between Adventure WV, The Carruth Center, and the WVU Collegiate Recovery Program. The goal of the program is to support and strengthen the commitment to recovery while deepening the recovery community. The program serves as an alternative to the stereotypical college spring break trip in which substance abuse and other poor health decisions are glorified. Additionally the program utilizes the striking landscape and climate of the desert southwest to create a challenging and exciting experience in which participants can expect to grow and be stretched as a person.  Please note that this is NOT a counseling based or clinical program.
The program will focus on a wilderness canoe trip through the Stillwater Canyon of the Green River. Camping, hiking and canoeing are the chief activities of the trip.  The program operates as a learning expedition in which all members are full participants on the team - responsible for paddling, setting up camp, cooking, cleaning etc. No previous outdoor experience or skills are required to participate in this program. Technical skills needed for the trip will be taught by program instructors. All technical equipment is supplied for each activity. Participants will receive a packing list of personal clothing and items which they must supply. Some loaner clothing (such as rain jackets and hiking boots) are available through Adventure WV.
The program is designed for current WVU students who are in stable recovery (at least 6 months) and wish to further strengthen their commitment, grow their support community and broaden their range of tools and knowledge around recovery. For the purposes of this trip, eligible students could be in recovery from a variety of issues such as substance abuse disorders, eating disorders and mental health disorders.
*This program fully covers airfare, technical equipment, and meals.*

1. Understanding that recovery is a long-term process with unique implications for student success.
2. Confronting myths and stigma related to addiction and recovery.
3. Using appropriate language related to addiction and recovery.
4. Being available to listen openly to students who express the need for help or support and talk to students who might be struggling with substance use.
5. Knowing what resources Morgantown has for people in recovery and how to access those services.

*We are more than willing to set up independent training for a department or group! If interested or want to learn more, please email Andrew at acaryl@mail.wvu.edu.
